Understanding EMDR

A structured therapy for memories that still feel present.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing.

While you briefly bring a memory to mind, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, taps or tones. This supports the brain to process the experience so it can feel less charged over time. You do not need to describe the memory in detail for EMDR to be used.

EMDR is one of the trauma-focused therapies recommended in the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of PTSD (Phoenix Australia, 2020)1 and by the World Health Organization (2013)2. Individual results vary.

1. Phoenix Australia, Australian PTSD Guidelines, 2020. 2. World Health Organization, Guidelines for the management of conditions specifically related to stress, 2013.

EMDR is commonly used for

Single distressing events, such as accidents or assaults
Complex or developmental trauma
Anxiety, grief and memories that keep resurfacing

Is it for me

EMDR is a good fit for many people, and timing matters.

EMDR may suit you if

  • A memory or experience still feels raw, even years later
  • Talking about it hasn't shifted how your body reacts
  • You would like a structured approach with clear phases
  • You can commit to regular sessions for a period of time

It may help to talk first if

  • You are currently in crisis or feel unsafe
  • You often feel detached, numb or lose time
  • Alcohol or drug use feels hard to manage right now
  • You are involved in a legal matter about the event

This doesn't rule EMDR out. It often means starting with grounding and resourcing first, which Adam builds into early sessions.
